Mysterious internal discoloration

Lock from Quality 1 gun , circa 1891:

Speculation is that this gun was lubricated with a non-petroleum based lubricant (i.e., whale oil). Is that a realistic possibility or is this just normal aging and patina?

I'm inclined to think it's a bit of both.
