Herters 16 Gauge Shells

Anyone using these shells or reloading the cases.

Max,there are many of us that load the Herters 16ga shells.The big question is which ones? The purple shells that were sold by Herters were 2.750" long a few years back.The new ones,now made by Winchester are 2.650" long.There is a big difference in the two types and how you go about loading them.Bear in mind that both types take an oversized primer.Feel free to give me a call.PS--If you have any of the older Herters purple factory shells,I would not shoot them in a L.C.Smith gun.I have had them pressure tested after I saw a Smith gun blow apart.These shells are way over American Specs.Good luck: Charlie 410-756-2095

The Herters Shell I have are black and sold through Cabela.

Max,The newer shells are black and should be made by Winchester in France.You can read the fine print on the box that will tell you where they are made.They are not a true 2.750" even though they are marked that way.I am now loading the new Winchesters made by the same folks and have four loadings on them so far.Feel free to call,if you care to.Charlie 410-756-2095

Hi Charlie the shells I got at Cabalas are made in France. The brass is stamped *16 on both the Herters and RST is got a few weeks back.
The hauls look very similar. The RTS are Cheds 209

Max, I called and left you a message earlier today.Yes the hulls are simular but much different.The RST hulls are shorter a much better quality.They will load easier and more times.The new Winchester 16ga stuff is made in France and the same length as the new Herters but the Winchesters are better to load.Loading 16ga.ammo is a real pain these days with so many different lengths out there to deal with.The stack height is different and when I have run them accross my Chrony the FPS readings are different too.Ready to pull your hair out yet! You get the hint that maybe somebody does not want us to load these.Charlie.
