Manufacturing date of my LC

I have a LC Smith 16 gage double barrel hammer shotgun serial number H79128 Was owned my grandfather trying to find out when it was manufactured.

The LCSCA encourages you to order a research letter to obtain ALL of the information in the Hunter Arms Company records.

David Williamson generously answered your question, with some addition information:
Bob your hammer gun was made in 1900 and would be a 3 pin lock with the latest "C style hammers. The joint check was discontinued in 1899.
There were three barrel option available, Royal Steel (fluid steel) at $20, Stub Twist $23, and Good Damascus $25. All hammer guns were sold through hardware or sporting good stores unless for the higher grades. Yours is most likely an F grade.

Drew, please correct me if I'm wrong but on page 89 of Dr. Jim's production book he states that hammer gun serialization changed in 1918. The "F" connotation was changed to "H" so I think Bob's gun was made in 1925

Brother Drew's comment was from a previous post and was a different serial number. This latest post with the "H" prefix is from 1925.

I have a LC Smith "Field" 20 Ga side by side double barrel shotgun and its serial number 38001 Is there any way to determine the date of manufacturing? Thank you for your help.

You can obtain all of the information about your shotgun by ordering a research letter. Go to the menus on the LCSCA Home Page.

Members responding to these requests are trying to be helpful, but he responses are often in error. The published tables provide only the approximate date and may vary from the actual date by two or three years. Each of the serial number blocks was used up to five times resulting in more confusion. I've seen responses to the "when was my shotgun made" question be off by more than 40 years. A research letter is the only way to be sure when the shotgun was made.
