Shoot feeler

I am thinking of putting together a two day SxS shoot in Ohio. If things work out with the club it would be around Columbus. I am thinking it would be open to all SxS shooters with an award for HOA and manufacture. The shoot would consist of 100 sporting clays, 50 Super sporting, 50 five stand and 50 FITASC for a total of 250 targets. I would like to get some feed back on this as to those that might be interested in an event like this before I move forward with organizing. There are not many SxS events in Ohio and I do not know of any events that offer SxS FITASC. I am thinking that if you enter you would be entering for all of the events. Would appreciate your feedback.

Hey Terry .... good to hear from you.
I’m always looking for a reason to go back to Ohio. My thoughts are this. Since there are not many sxs shooting events, there are probably not many sxs shooters that would be interested in all of those FITASC shooting events. The LCSCA organized a Shoot in Ohio ten years ago, or so, and my recollection is that we had around twenty five shooters; several were our Club members. So my opinion is that sporting clays, five stand, and wobble trap would attract some shooters, but a full range of FITASC events would not be very attractive. But, perhaps our Club has more Ohio shooters now. I hope so.

Larry Moore would be a good one to chat with about your question. Perhaps he will see your inquiry. Larry has a lot of contacts in the Ohio Gun Collectors Association. He was a key person in organizing two sxs Ohio shoots. This was several years ago.

Terry, count me in for such an event. Perhaps you might include some small gauge events and provide more shooting for the 2 days.
4-500 targets is about right for a 2 day shoot.Not that everyone will shoot that many but there are some of us who will! Good luck setting this up!

Terry, great idea, thanks for even thinking about taking the time to organize something like this! I agree with John on the number of targets, all of us living closer to the east coast have a long enough drive that we'd need a "shooting return" on our investment in drive time (Philadelphia to Columbus is the best part of 8 hours). Another issue would be scheduling without competing with existing shoots in your draw area. Count me in as soon as I get my vaccination.

Thank you everyone for your feedback so far. If we can pull this off, the number of targets for the shoot can be increased by adding sub gauge targets as John suggests and by adding another game or two. Bottom line, a 4 to 500 target event is doable with enough interest in the shoot for the club to commit its resources.

I think there would a lot of interest from IN. shooters depending on scheduled time. There is a shoot in southern IN. in Aug. [Hoosier Classic] put on by Randy Roberts that draws 45 to 50 shooters. So if your shoot gets some advertising in IN. it should be well attended.

Another reason to chat w/Larry Moore is that he has, or had, a radio program; he could promote the Shoot if he still has it.

Here is an update - Talked to the range owner yesterday and he tells me that we can use the facility (C/4 shooting center in Madison, OH) for the shoot, just need to set a date in June - July time frame. We will be able to shoot Trap, Skeet, 5 stand, sporting clays, FITASC and possibly Super Sporting. I can see skeet, 5 stand and super sporting being shot as sub gage events as well as 12 gage. There are two hotels within 5 miles of the club. I will talk with the owner in a couple of weeks to see if we can put together a two day 500 + target event. Will keep you posted.

Hey Terry, keep in mind that the great northern sxs shoot in medford wi has been moved to the 2nd week of July. May want to touch base with them to see if that will be the same date again. Mark Beesland may be able to shed some light on shoot date for this coming year. Maybe 4th weekend in july. That would be the weekend after our pa state shoot. I may be able to talk koneski to go, our state shoot is at rock moutain this year and he would not be able to attend your shoot until after states. Might want to steer clear of that time frame. Maybe 3rd or 4th weekend of June may also work. Keep us informed, may be able to get a whole squad from my buddies.

Great NE SxS shoot at Hausmann's is June 3-5. Northern SxS at Rock Mountain is 7/29-8/1. I suggest avoiding crowding either of those dates.

If you get your event into August I may be able to get away with my usual SxS crew!! Just picked up a SBT gun. Would be nice to have a SBT event too. I do like the 500 target number for the two days. I'd be happy to shoot 500+.

Shoot update. I have secured a venue for the shoot. It will be at C/4 shooting center in Madison, Ohio. We are looking at a 500 bird event over two days. The planned events will include:

1. Sporting clays
2. 5 Stand
3. Trap
4. Skeet
5. FITASC

The plan is to shoot 250 targets each day. Talking with the club manager we are looking at a .70 cents per target (300.00) for the event. However, this will include trophy's for each event winner and a significant cash payout to HOA, 2nd place and 3ed place. We are working on the payout details, but will base them on 100 shooters. We are still working on a workable date. It is looking like late July or early August. The shoot will be open to any make/model of SxS.

There are several major hotel chains within 5 miles of the club.

Got it and sounds good. I will check with Mark Douglas that does the Ohio Vintager Shoots at Cardinal Centerand at Eagles Nest (I think). Hope to see everyone there.

Unfortunately we are unable to come up with a date that does not conflict with another shoot. Part of this problem is my summer travel plans. We have the venue and will try to make this shoot happen in 2022.

David, our State Shoot is July 15-18. Our Northern SxS Challenge is July 29-August 1.
