My first LC Smith

Hello All,

My name is Oscar and I recently acquired my first LC Smith which is a 12 Gauge Field Grade. I am unable to figure the year it is and would love if someone could help me. Furthermore, I would eventually love to shoot her (of course I will contact a gunsmith first and have them inspect the gun). But if someone could also give me a ball park idea from what they see, if they think I’ll ever be able to shoot her and if so if I could use off the shelf ammo.

Oscar, your gun looks to be in fairly good shape but someone should make an assessment with the gun in hand. It is difficult to assess whether it is shootable just by the photos. We can't give you a year of manufacture or much other information without the serial number. Please post it if you are willing. If not,please send it to me at cedarclyffelodge@gmail.com Thanks, Tom

Oscar, your gun was manufactured in 1928 so it would have 2 9/16" chambers unless a former owner had them bored out for 2 3/4".

I believe that a 12 gauge would have 2 3/4-inch chambers. The 16 gauge shotguns from this period had 2 9/16-inch chambers.

Hi again Mr.Garver,

Thank You for letting me know the Manufacturing date. From what I've read it sounds like 12 gauge from that era will have to be bought from a specialty dealer. And I wont be able to use off the shelf shells. So once I have it inspected by a gunsmith I will have to do that.

I appreciate the offer but I live in Port Townsend, Washington (a small liberal town with one gun shop). So I will most likely have to go a ways unless further research on my part reveals a gunsmith.

Loads for my 12g LC Smith

After the gun has been evaluated, esp. checking the head of the stock for cracks, you should be confident using 2 3/4" 1 oz. at 1200 fps off-the-shelf target loads.

Consider attending the Southern Side x Side this coming April in Sanford, NC. The LC Smith Collectors Association will be there in force to compete with the Parker Gun Collectors Association. We will have knowledgeable members on hand who can inspect your gun; and further, you'll have ample opportunities the shoot your gun and enjoy the best fellowship in the world.

Now that you own an L.C. Smith, you will want to join the L.C. Smith Collectors Association. Your member benefits include four quarterly issues of the L.C. Smith Journal. Each issue has an article on reloading shells for Smiths, along with much other informative and enjoyable content. Our reloading columnist, Charlie Brooks, has been reloading for 50 years!
