While rummaging thru some old files I came across this photo which reminded me that September and Dove season are almost upon us; so as I look back on one of my great days afield, I'm taking a minute to wish everyone a safe and memorial shoot with their grand old LC Smith shotguns. The pic below is not great (was taken with an old style analog camera) but shows a limit of doves taken with a 1903 vintage Grade 5E 32" 12-bore I once owned. When acquired this old LC was an abused wreck. It was restored by gunsmith Buck Hamlin and restocked using a piece of exhibition English. Many was the time a hunter from across a dove field would come over to my blind just to see what I was shooting, because I was "knocking down birds at 75-80 yards"! Obviously I couldn't make such shots consistently, but whenever I calculated the correct lead, this old Smith gun would ground a dove at amazing distances. Good shooting!
