Stock dye and finish

I have several higher grade guns to refinish the stocks in right now and am currently needing to stain one. What stains are yall using. I usually just play it by ear and stain based on what I think looks right for the gun using minwax stains but not necessarily want to use that on these nicer non 00 and field grade guns. I have some powdered alkanet root but not yet mixed it and believe it would result in a little too British red color. My finish is usually pro custom oil as I've found it to be the easiest to attain a good finish but also open to any suggestions. Thanks, Zachary

Zachary, I use Birchwood Casey Tru-Oil from the local sporting goods store.
5-6 coats usually does the job.
It's pretty user friendly stuff.
For stain I use Art's Original formula French Red from Brownells, says Original Herters formula on the can.
I would also be curious about what others use.

Well I ended up using old masters red mahogany and it was perfect! I have never used this product but it did what I wanted. It was oil base which was new for me being a commercial product. This stock had a natural brownish hue that blended so well with the red mahogany. Going to look nice after the finish is applied.

Very nice, Zachary. I use Minwax [oil base] cherry as a first coat. I wipe that in lightly with a cloth and then follow up with walnut trying not to get it too dark. I like Watco oil as a final finish using either rejuvenating oil or dark walnut depending on how dark a finish I want. Usually 5 or 6 coats rubbed in with a cloth and then buff to a desired gloss

Timberluxe...I used pure tung oil and spar varnish..(equal parts) for years...Then I came across Brian Boards Timberluxe finish..Never looked back..Brian also has a perfect walnut stain if needed..or..I use Fiebings leather dye(Dark red ).. mixed with stain if a little red cast is needed.

I have a million different finishes I use based on what I'm wanting to do but I haven't used the timberlux but will definitely get me some to try on a future project. The stock I posted is a bit darker and more red than the picture shows.
