Just received my Spring 2002 DGJ and read Tom Breeden's great article on Eagle Grade Traps, single and double. I knew my friend Tom had another article in his hopper.

Tom I enjoyed your article very much, I am the proud owner of a Eagle Long Range with straight grip, 32" bbls, double triggers and extractors.

Craig: I recall from your articles in the DGJ that you are a 'waterfowler' so it doesn't surprise me that you have a Smith Long Range to down those ducks in upper northwest New York. You are fortunate to have one of 29 Eagles so marked. Your post got me thinking that I don't remember ever seeing a Long Range in any grade with all options, vent rib, single trigger, ejectors, beavertail. I am sure they are out there; perhaps someone reading this will post an example.

Mills: I hope you have had a chance to read and enjoy the article; if you learned anything then 'mission accomplished'

Now I know why no one responded to my invitation to post examples of Long Range fully optioned guns. A recent record check by Jim Stubbendieck indicates only eight guns so configured:
SN 84067 Crown 32 inches
109326 Crown 32 inches
112897 Crown 32 inches
104052 Specialty 32 inches
119839 Specialty 32 inches
100409 Trap 30 inches
105552 Trap 32 inches
111708 Trap 32 inches

Note that all with the exception of one have long 32 inch barrels and all were made between the years of 1925 and 1929, inclusive

No fully optioned guns were found marked Wild Fowl

A member informs me he has serial number 89697M that is a fully optioned Long Range Monogram with extra barrels. The records do not show the LR designation but that is not unusual as sometimes these extra markings, as well as others, are not recorded.

Thanks Tom. I neglected to report that the Monogram barrels are 32 inches and 28 inches choked F & F with reinforcing splinter behind barrel loop and composed of Whitworth steel. Gun was shipped with both barrels in March 1926 so it falls right in line with the other eight listed above

Hi Tom, In Feb. 2019 I acquired an LCS, Specialty grade, 12 ga, ejector, Long-Range, 3" chambers, with 32" F/F, hunter-one trigger, BT forend, with 2' DAH. s/n RE 772xx. Was this made in 1925?

It is an all original gun, perfect screws, and never messed with. I wonder if this fits into a rarety LCS category? Thank you.

Mike, the only way to answer your question is for you to request a research letter from Dr. Jim Stubbendieck. With your serial number Jim can give you the exact ship date, all options ordered with the gun, and exactly how many Specialties were made with those same options. Knowing that information only serves to increase the value of your Smith.

Michael, I believe your gun was made in 1924 about one year before it is reported that Hunter Arms started placing vent ribs on double barrel guns. Since you didn't indicate the presence of a vent rib on your gun I assume it is without one. Even without the vent rib you have an excellent gun but the only way to find its uniqueness is through a research letter as Tom Archer has suggested

Tom, I got the research letter today. My Speciality
12 x 32" Long Range with Hunter One, ejectors, and beavertail forend is indeed unique. There were only 2 guns made in this exact configuration. Mike
