I just bought the Brophy book on Ebay. Thanks for letting us know about it.
I am a new member with a lot of questions about this old shotgun I inherited from my great grandfather. Double 12 bore, hammer type #78444 F
It hasn't been handled much in at least 50 years.
It needs a forend.

Bob, it is a great book with a lot of knowledge in there.
Your gun is from 1889, could you tell me how long the barrel are and if they are Damascus or Royal Steel. Also does your gun have the joint check on the barrels that go into the receiver. This stopped in 1899 and the last serial number I have is in the 786xx range. Thanks.

Bob, great find. I'm working on SN 77130 F right now. If you reply to my e-mail I can send photos of the style of forend and checkering pattern that you should be looking for. The records for the SN block 70,000-79,999 were not recovered so there isn't a lot of info on these guns. I have seen aprrox. a dozen guns in this SN range and they were all hammer guns. cedarclyffelodge@gmail.com

The barrels are 30 inches and I believe are Damascus. I can see a pattern flowing on the barrels. I have never seen these before. There is a break in the rib about 2 inches from the breach end of the barrels. It is just a line where two separate pieces of metal come together. I am assuming that is the joint check. What was that for?
I have been away from guns since Vietnam. Just getting interested in these because I have this one that belonged to my great grandfather and a J.N. Scotts muzzle loader that was my great-great grandfathers. I've had these guns since '76 but never did anything with them.

Bob that break is a separation to where the top rib extension is brazed onto the barrels. On the higher graded guns that joint was filled with silver and on the highest graded guns is was gold.
The barrels were held together by solder and the top rib extension was brazed for strength.
Some very good information in that book and the other by Colonel Brophy, "L.C. Smith Shotguns".
