Hunter never stamped a second barrel set indicator on the rib, that designation was stamped on the face of the forend hanger lug and was a simple number "2" stamp. This format was the same whenever a gun was returned for the fitting of a secondary set or ordered in that fashion originally. Many Smith guns have received a secondary set of after-market fitted barrels; and I, and a number of other members I know, own similarly barrel guns. Sometimes in those instances a serial number will be changed to match that stamped on the water table of the frame, but not always. That said, a customer could special order the location of his secondary barrel set indicator I suppose, but I've never seen of heard of an example marked other than as described above. If that was the case, it would be imperative in a collector's view to have factory authentication (the original order, factory correspondence, or a research letter from Jim Stubbendieck); but apart from such hard evidence, I'd start by closely checking the serial number stamp on the secondary barrel set for any evidence of over stamping and differences in font style and size. And by the way, the primary (or first) barrel set was never marked in any way as such by the gun works.|
