Thanks to Bro. David Williamson for the question, and I thought a poll would be helpful. Replies are permitted.
I am still trying to wrap my head around storing barrels down. This subject is brought up on other sites and it always brings to me the same question, "just how much oil are you putting on." Two drops of oil or a light spray on a clean cloth is all that is needed to wipe down the metal parts after the gun is cleaned. If a side lock and you cleaned the inside with a Q tip and some Hoppes, a light coating on another Q tip is all you need. I do wear gloves when cleaning my guns, but my fingerprints are non acidic and do not cause any rust spots. The only time I store any guns barrel down is when I am running out of space and have to "double up."

Greetings .... I’ve been storing my shotgun ‘barrels down’ for several years. Years ago I bought a pre-owned Perazzi TMX w/a lot of oil soaked into the stock that looked like it was there for years. After some time, the oil dissipated from the stock through gravity.
Some folks, my Dad for example, preserved his farm tools in old motor oil. His habit of using plenty of (gun) oil to clean his guns carried over from his tool cleaning habit. I don’t recall that he stained his gunstocks, but it could have happened.

I store mine muzzles up. However, I do NOT oil the inside of the locks/frame, or leave the barrels wet inside.

The amount of oil you use I also believe varies in the part of the country you live in.For example,I live in the deep southeast where humidity has a great effect on metal surfaces that have been touched. This could be different in the north or west where temperatures and humidity vary greatly. Our temperature stays the same 8 to 9 months out of the year.HOT
