Winter L.C. Smith Journal article on what newcomers need to know about the Southern Side by Side

We want to encourage all of our members to enjoy the fellowship, competition and fun of the Southern Side by Side next April at Deep River Sporting Clays in North Carolina. We're planning an article in the next issue of the L.C. Smith Journal that will cover what you need to know about attending the Southern -- how things work with the Challenge and Hammer Gun events, where to stay, where to eat, what to bring with you, etc. If you've attended the Southern and/or participated in L.C. Smith events there, please post: why you attend, what you most enjoy, where you stay and why, etc. Anything a newcomer might have a question about is fair game for a response from you! My wife and I would like to attend this function as we are now retired, but our concern is mostly weather conditions and places to stay with a 5th wheel trailer. We are new to traveling in a 5th wheel and our biggest concern is not being caught in a blizzard or tornado etc.

Thanks, Ken. I'll see what I can find out about places to park the 5th Wheel near Sanford, NC., for the article. Good question -- would not have occurred to me. Jim and I drive to NC and stay at the same hotel every year.

If you are pulling a 5th wheel. I would look at Jordan Lake they have a lot of campsites and the drive wouldn’t be to far to the event maybe 20 to 25 minutes. Weather is usually warm out of my 13 years attending rain was the only weather concern.

The problem with staying at Jordan Lake is that they close the park at 9 PM. The gates are closed and locked and you have to park your vehicle on the street and walk to your camp site. Not good when carrying guns and other shooting items.

I generally stay at Dicken's RV park, 2501 Corinth Rd, Moncure, NC 27559-9501, http://home.windstream.net/kdicke1/index.html
Be advised it's not really a campground, but a RV park for workers building a nearby Duke Energy plant. It has ice, laundry facilities and that's about it. All the spots are graveled and have water/electric/sewer on site. We have stayed there for the last 4 years without any problems. It's also relatively inexpensive.

Deep River is my club, I would never chose to miss this event, and I volunteer as a trapper each year. There is nothing else like it.

Advice:
* Sunday seems to be the best day to get the best price on a gun (and other stuff) from the vendor tables.
* Some of the great deals are in fact to good to be true.
* The taco truck is the best deal on food.
* Be pleasant to the volunteers, and they will be be more pleasant to you.
* The trust does get stretched from time to time about condition and work performed on guns for sale. Trust but verify.
