8 ga lc

i attended the southern in april and brought a few guns. one was a previously unknown 8 ga with a seracuse ser. no. in a quality 1. a lot of members saw the gun and i believe found it interesting, but i never heard any opinions on the gun. i would be interested in any opinions from any of you who did see the gun.

After examining the gun personally and reading Buck Hamlin's comments, I agree with Buck and believe he is spot on in his opinion of authenticity (save for the blued over Damascus barrels of course; which I understand are being put back to original finish).

Hello Tom and Don, OK, What was the opinion of Buck about this L C Smith big bore shotgun ??? ..... I assume that we are speaking about the L C Smith with odd sized bores but 8 gauge chambers ??????..... Am I correct ????.... Jent

8 ga bls. i'll quote Bucks letter regarding the bls. "the bls. are twist and are original 30 inch the chokes are .025 and .030 right and left and are of the early tapered style with no straight wall.they have not been cut."
to anyone who may be interested i'm willing to send a copy of the 2 page letter from buck. He makes no mention of odd sized bores? his explanation of the gun makes total sense. but i have an open mind and would like to learn more. all opinions are welcome. Don

8 ga. mystery. others have agreed with me that this gun may be the last 8 ga. gun made by HUnter Arms

I'm confused. I thought it was a Syracuse gun with Quality 1 style engraving but it is a Hunter Arms gun Grade 1?

The best big L C Smith that I saw and handled at The Southern SXS Shoot this year, 2019, was a 10 bore L C Smith built on an 8 gauge frame ...... Those barrels were either 32 inches or 34 inches long, I have forgotten which but I can recover the information ...... This gun was in very very high original condition .... This was only the third LCS that I have seen built in this configuration .... This gun might be the biggest 10 bore SXS shotgun that I have ever picked up .... Good Shooting To You All, Jent.

Syracuse breech sizes

The Syracuse L.C. Smiths were offered in three different frame sizes, Regular, Heavy and Extra Heavy. I have measurements of some of the Regular and Heavy frames but only one or two of the Extra Heavy frames and looking at the bores from the breech there looks to be enough metal to make an 8 gauge out of them.
I have pictures and will post them later to show the difference.

i'.ll include a photo of the rib extension which i believe is much larger than a 10 ga.i'd be interested to know if it's one of the three different sizes you mentioned in your post.

Don, I would appreciate seeing the letter from Buck. Also if you could include a description of gun, ie; barrel length, serial number and if you could measure the distance from the rim to the rib extension.
I did finally find the one I had and it shows 3/64 " (.0469. I didn't have anything larger and hopefully yours will be the Extra Heavy barrels. I know that I have one that is larger just never upgraded my pictures.

It also shows 2 measurment 8 gauge barrels.

A better service to LCSCA members would be to give us the measurements of the width of the breech balls of the three different sizes of eight gauge frames. We could then make a determination of the relative size of our ten gauge Smiths also. I wonder if we could also get a scan of the letter mentioned. Thanks.
