Just picked up a hammer Elise, need guidance

Just picked up a very good 12 gauge field model hammer gun.royal steel brls. All original series 152xxx, no h on water table or flats, f under serial number

I know it's a field grade hunter gun, but I thought all hammer guns from hunter had a h prefix

Gun has mirror bores, locks up like a vault
Any ideal on number date?

Larry, your hammer gun dates to 1907. It is an F model and not a field grade. Hammer guns didn't have the "h" designation until 1918. If you have a copy of Dr. Jim's book he gives a detailed description of hammer guns and the change in model identification

My gun is marked hunter arms on royal steel barrels serial number on water table, barrels and flats, what I can tell the royal steel brls are 1917 or later

Royal Steel was offered for hammer guns starting in 1898 Larry

Thanks for the response, could it be that it was sent back to factory after the hunter transition to have been rebarreled, because barrel serial number matches flats and water table

I'm sorry I was thinking it was later when hunter bought out lc Smith, I just went back and read the history and see that the gun would be correct with hunter Mark's in 1907.

Any way I have a great old gun that is tight as the day it left the plant,

Larry, I have 4 hammered "Elsies" with Royal steel barrels that I shoot all the time-1899,1900,1906 and 1911. In the summer I shoot at a club in NY, 2 hours north of Fulton, and the guys are amazed that these guns are in working condition. Good shooting to you.

Hey Larry congratulations on owning a LC Smith hammer gun. I have a 1907 that I bought at the Southern years ago from an LCSCA member, best buy I ever made, love it. You may want to contact our good member an expert on
Smith Hammer Guns David Williamson an see if he has any more copies of his book. The Subtle and not so Subtle Changes of the LC Smith Hammer Gun. The only man to ever write a book on Smith Hammer guns that I'm aware of.
