Thoughts on Refurbishing this old gun

I'm thinking of refurbishing this LC Smith Hammergun from 1889 based on SN research. I understand that it could decrease the value of the gun, however, given the condition of this one, I don't see it as highly valuable. I would love to see what Turnbull could do with it to restore it.

Thoughts?

Your gun appears to be a low grade gun in nice condition and would not have much value to a collector. It is an American "thing" to shy away from restoration of fine shotguns, the Europeans have been sending theirs in to be tuned, refreshed and restored for century's. Is a well maintained Purdy or Boss worth less because it has been rebuilt? If the gun has been used for its intended purpose over the last 100+ years it is probably in need of a facelift. So in my humble opinion give the old girl a face lift and enjoy shooting a pretty gun. In another 100 years who will know it had been restored.

Carl in looking at your serial number your gun is from 1898. It is a 6 pin 2 screw lock with the Type II hammers.
It looks in decent condition and in my opinion is good enough, but restoring it would make it look great. Buck Hamlin of Pevely, MO could do this work for you at a much cheaper cost. Doug's work is great but you will pay for it.

Hello Carl, The old LCS SXS hammergun in these pictures is a type of LCS known as a "roller check" type of LCS SXS. I very much like these guns with the roller check system. These guns operate differently then all other LCS SXSs and probably all other SXS shotguns ever built. When you load these roller check guns you can push and should push the fresh shells all the way into the chambers, emphasis here, all the way into the chambers...... Then you can easily close the gun..... This is a big deal and a much better system then any other LCS SXS system in my opinion..... You can find these roller check guns in both hammerguns and hammerless guns made by LCS..... posted by Jent

There are a number of fine gunsmiths that can do a great job on your gun. I would shop around, especially to see photos of their color case hardening. You may have to wait a while to get it back, too!

Carl, let me add another name to your list of gunsmiths who are qualified to restore an LC Smith hammer gun. Steve Wesbrook is in Arlington, VA and specializes in the restoration of all makes of antique hammer guns. I have used him for several partial and complete restorations and been very satisfied.
Steve's email address is wesbrooksd@aol.com, he is a wealth of information and an excellent gunsmith.
You can't go wrong with any of the names listed in this thread, but whoever you choose, ask them how long it will take to get it back before you send them the gun.
