LC Smith 10 gauge

I recently inherited a Hunter Arms, LC Smith SN 88754. It a hammered, double triggered with Damascus barrel. Am I correct this gun was made in 1901? It has an F near the serial number. Is this to show it is a field grade model? I have read I don't need to shoot modern shells in it because of being a Demascus barreled gun. Is this true?

Danny, 1901 would be correct for the year your hammer gun was made. The "F" designation means it was the lowest grade made, although at this time it was the only grade made unless you special ordered one.
You can shoot modern shells in these guns and many of us here shoot them only after being judged by a gun smith that knows L.C. Smith that the gun is safe to shoot.

Danny - your gun was designed for 1 1/4 ounces of shot with 4 1/4 Dr. Eq. of Smokeless powder in a 2 7/8" case; NOT 3 1/2". Safety can only be determined after a careful evaluation of the barrels, esp. wall thickness, by a double gun specialist. RST usually has 2 7/8" 10g shells in stock.

Thanks. How many of the 10 gauge models were made in 1901? Does any body know of a qualified gunsmith in my area of southwest Alabama?

Hello Danny, As Doctor Drew pointed out your old L C Smith SXS 10 gauge was most likely built to shoot a 2 and 7/8 inch long cartridge that used LEAD SHOT and nothing but LEAD SHOT...... Do not shoot STEEL shot through your old L C Smith....
