This old side by side has been in our attic for at least 50 years and I don't know anything about it. I got your name from the LC Smith Collectors Assn. webpage and was hoping you could shed some light on this old gun.
The serial number is 54432 with a capital letter F underneath. I believe the left side of the break reads T Mar 29 85 but I can't be sure.
The left barrel reads Hunter Arms Co. Makers, Fulton NY and L.C. Smith is stamped on both sides below and in front of the hammers.
Any information would be appreciated. Thank you

Doug, your hammer gun is from 1897, it is what I call a 5 pin 2 screw lock with the Type II hammers. This would also be a back action lock meaning the mainspring is before the action or tumbler (hammer/s). These shotguns were made very nice and many of us here still shoot them in events. If you decide to shoot this gun I would suggest you take it to a good double gun gunsmith that knows L.C. Smith's to get a report as to the condition of barrels. This gun should still have Damascus barrels and if the wall thickness is ok it will be fine to shoot with lower pressure, low velocity shells.
