    Doug, your hammer gun is from 1897, it is what I call a 5 pin 2 screw lock with the Type II hammers. This would also be a back action lock meaning the mainspring is before the action or tumbler (hammer/s). These shotguns were made very nice and many of us here still shoot them in events.
    If you decide to shoot this gun I would suggest you take it to a good double gun gunsmith that knows L.C. Smith's to get a report as to the condition of barrels. This gun should still have Damascus barrels and if the wall thickness is ok it will be fine to shoot with lower pressure, low velocity shells.
