Harvey made at least yearly trips to the West Coast to promote Smith guns as early as 1895
Sporting Life "HONORS TO McMURCHY" Harvey McMurchy, the prince of traveling men, has been doing the trade on the Pacific Coast, and also taking part in the pigeon tournaments. Of course he held his own with the Smith gun, and the San Francisco “Chronicle” of May 4 has this to say about him: “The honors of the day in both live birds and inanimates went to Harvey McMurchy. McMurchy not only won the chief live-bird match of the day with a clean score, but in all the other events was well up among the teams and shared the money. To many of the local shooters the work of McMurchy was a revelation. His kills were clean and the spectators scarcely knew which most to admire, the evident skill of the man who held the gun or his graceful poise at the score.
He always visited the Olympic Gun Club and the California Wing Shooting Club, both in San Francisco. Jack Fanning was a regular competitor at both, using a Smith.
This image is from 1910 and several long barrel banjo forend Smiths are on the gun rack. I can't pick out Harvey nor Jack however. Harvey was still a Hunter Arms touring rep, and Jack was promoting DuPont products and trap shooting
