Barry, few L.C. Smith shooter have more experience than Charlie Brooks regarding shooting 16 ga., and L.C. Smiths in particular. Around here, the Federal ammo is hard to find. Charlie didn't mention it, but you should look for their 1 oz. loading, H160, with your preference of shot size. Velocity is listed at 1165 ft./sec, and they are available in 6's, 7.5's, and 8's.
I finally tried the RST Falcon Lites last weekend and they are a delight to shoot! 7/8 oz. of shot is plenty for nearly all the shooting I do with my 16 (clays, doves, and quail).
Charlie and I have worked up a 7/8 oz. reload that you may want to try if you get around to that phase of the 16 ga. It runs just a little faster than the Falcon Lites at 1,200 ft.sec. Very easy on the gun and shoulder.
