From the beginning, Smith 12g chambers were 2 3/4", but some Live Bird and Inanimate Target shooters specified 3 or even 3 1/4" chambers.

The "football" Chamber 3 Inches mark began to appear about 1910

Hunter Arms Company lengthened the 20 gauge chambers from 2 1/2" to 2 3/4" in 1936. Earlier 20g guns might however be marked with longer chambers.

L.C. Smith and Fulton 16 gauge guns manufactured as late as 1939 are still found to have 2 9/16" chambers.

And not all Long Range Wild Fowl (introduced in 1923) chambers were 3"

The chamber length NOW of course may not be the chamber length when the gun left the factory.
