I've owned three Smith guns with HOT trigger units; a 1912 Grade 3, a 1905 vintage A-2, and a 1926 vintage Ideal Grade; all 12-bores. I got a deal on the Grade 3 BECAUSE the HOT trigger did not work at all; Jerry Andrews fixed it right up so that I never had another issue, and of all the guns I've sold and traded that is the piece over which I still kick my ass. The trigger on the A-2 is still going strong; and I've yet to have an issue with the Ideal Grade. Personally I like the HOT trigger, and of all the early domestic SST designs, I consider the HOT the best (certainly far more reliable than the Parker and Lefever versions I've owned!). I'd be willing to bet that Buck Hamlin was the gunsmith who advised you to convert to double triggers, as that was always his advice to me; and I actually allowed him to convert a 1903 vintage 5E I once owned, but for me personally conversion would be my last option. If you like everything else about this little gun, make your offer based on a non-functioning trigger; then send it to Jerry Andrews. Jerry's human like the rest of us and certainly doesn't possess magical powers; but if Jerry can't fix the danged thing, then and only then do you consider a double trigger conversion. And that's my free opinion for whatever it may be worth to you. Tom
