Trying to identify shotgun and is it safe to shoot with modern ammo

Hello,
I inherited a this shotgun from my grandfather. It is a side by side 16g with external hammers.
Below is all the information I have on the firearm:
On the left barrel:
Hunter Arms Co., Makers, Fulton, N(the rest here is unreadable)
On the left side of the receiver:
LC Smith
On the right side of the receiver, under the chambers near the break/hinge:
Serial Number: 139814
Centered below the serial number:
F
The gun has been in the family seemingly forever and all family members who would be able to provide further info have passed.
I would greatly appreciate any and all assistance in identifying this heirloom.
