My first "true" L. C. Smith Archived Message

Posted by Jim Miller on April 23, 2017, 7:29 am

Stumbled across an auction flyer for a "Spring Consignment" at an small auto auction locally. Near the bottom was noted L. C. Smith 20 gauge. Not having anything else to do, I decided to attend and look over the half dozen firearms. Long story shortened...yesterday I became the owner of a 20 ga. 00 grade with straight stock, ejectors, 28" barrels, S/N 624x E. Thanks to this website, I was able to determine the grade (I thought the 00 was a frame size) and the DOM (1911?) and other miscellaneous information that is very helpful. I hesitate to relate the price, for fear of being branded a thief, but I was thrilled to pay $450 as I was prepared to go over twice that. If I have the date right, it is in amazing condition for a 106 year old gun. A coat of shellac? has been poorly applied on the butt and a tiny chip broken off the toe of the plate (wood is OK) otherwise, all seems perfect.

In the title, the "true" reference is to my other L. C. Smith, the Marlin Deluxe version I bought new in the early '70s...no comparison! If there is any interest, I can snap a couple pictures to add. Mostly just posted to show there are still a few out there and to thank the site administers for making all this information and histoy available.
