Pam, your father in law's gun is from around 1881-82. From your description as having Stub Twist barrels it is most likely a Quality A in either a 10 gauge or 12 gauge. Most A's had a straight grip but for a $5.00 option you could get a Price of Wales grip (semi-pistol grip). Barrel lengths in catalogs stated either 30 or 32".
If the gun is broke open, and barrels taken off, the grade stamp should be on the receiver where the barrels fit to it.
