John, if there is a window with the letter S in it, the gun is on safe, push towards lever and gun is ready to fire. If you can pull safety to rear and fire, it is a 3 position safety. Not all guns had them. The early Syracuse L.C. Smiths that I have seen had them. On the Hunter Arms Co. 3 position safety, not all had the window but if the safety could be pulled rearward it was a 3 position, and you are right, not all had them.
