    depending on what I am working on, i have sets of jaw covers/pads

    they are made of

    sheet brass or wood or leather covered

    in any case, keep them clean of grit

    also different vises for different tasks, a standard bench vise is limited

    a parrot or a gunsmith vise (a modification on the former)can do a lot more
