You basically have three options. You can use a shooting glove (my preference), a leather hand guard that slides down the barrel tubes and serves as a "forend" extension, or you can convert your splinter to a beavertail. For target shooting I find a thin leather glove works fine; but if I'm on a dove field and the birds are flying as fast as I can reload I'd want a thicker glove, as I've experienced barrels so hot they'd pull blisters. Been a long time since I've been on a dove shoot as just described; but shooting flurries at a five stand would probably be about the same as regards barrel heating.
