There may be a bit of confusion relayed in what David stated. The Marlin guns built between 1946-1950 are the L C Smith Gun Co guns built in the Hunter Arms factory after Marlin took over, and bear the prefix FWS. These are true sidelock guns, whereas the later Marlin guns (1968-1971 approx.) are sideplate guns built overseas, and bear the FWM prefix. They are not considered L C Smiths, despite the engraving.
