Twelve and sixteen gauge stocks are interchangeable as far as the fit to the metal goes. The hang up is the butt and plate are smaller on the sixteen so it won't be right for the twelve.
A twelve will work fine on a sixteen though but be prepared to remove a lot of material from the butt before it starts to look like a sixteen.
