Pickle jars work great for holding the stock while the head soaks, which can take up to a week. Also, start off by spraying the inletting and cracks with Easy Off oven cleaner and scrubbing with a tooth brush while rinsing in hot water. The foaming action really removes oil and grime from the cracks and tight spaces, and no, it won't hurt the wood. I've done it dozens of times.
