Light hammer strike prompted me to disassemble lock. Mainspring remained compressed, almost completely compressed. No "spring" left in it at all. Compared that spring with other LC Smith locks [disassembled them, too]. Other springs rebounded out a bit when removed from lock. The springs in question are basically permanently compressed, both legs of the springs almost touching one another when the spring has been removed.
