Although there were limited numbers of early 12-bore Smith guns shipped with 26" barrels, examples are so few that all should be held in suspicion without supporting documentation; so you have three options, the best of which is to pay for a research letter prior to making a purchase. Your second option is to take the gun to a professional double gunsmith and have the barrels checked and measured for original choke. The last, and simplest and marginally reliable method is to post a pic of the muzzle ends of the barrels here. If a set of barrels has been cut we can often make that determination visually by examining the quality of the finished work done.
