    Proper Gun Fit Archived Message

A question. I have heard shooters say and have also read it in other places as well, that the most important thing we can do to help with shooting better is to be measured to determine correct gun fit. Namely, length of pull, drop at heel, drop at comb, amount of cast-on or cast-off and the degree of pitch at the heel of the stock.

I know how to measure each of these on a shotgun, but am not completely sure how to measure this on myself or a friend. Similarly, in talking with other hunters, I am amazed at how few of them have heard of the need for proper gun fit.

None of the local gun shops in my area seem sophisticated enough to help with this. So I recently asked the guys at my local Orvis store and they gave me the name and number of a man at a local sporting clays place, who when I called him, he said it would cost $1,200 and would take several hours to use a try-gun as well as provide shooting instruction.

Unfortunately, I don't have that kind of money, although I would pay it if I could. What affordable alternatives does a guy have, just to get measured so that he can ensure his guns at least fit right? Is it possible for two regular guys to measure each other and how would we do that? Like so many other sports, proper fitting for the basic equipment should not be a barrier to success, especially if we want the sport to grow.
I would be very, very grateful for your assistance.
    Warmest regards,
