    L. C. Smith 10 GA "Syracuse" Hammer gun - Fair Value Archived Message

After many years of discussion, my aging uncle (in Utah) has agreed to sell me (in Virginia) his L. C. Smith 10 Bore "Syracuse" hammer gun with 30" Damascus barrels and double triggers. I believe in was made in 1882. I held it for a few minutes several years ago during a visit and not knowing what I know now, recall that it is very heavy, mostly original, including the wood/checkering. It appeared to have virtually no case color nor barrel bluing left, some small barrel dents, as well as pitting in the bore. I don't recall the Damascus pattern on the barrels. The tang thumb lever is to the left and the barrels are a little loose/not on face. There is no butt plate and the left hammer appears to have a non standard screw holding it in. The wood needs refinishing and I don't recall, but it may have the usual cracking where the wood and sideplate meet.

He has asked me to determine the fair market value of the gun, so could use your help to keep me honest. I have attached three very poor pictures taken by his daughter if it helps.

If you want to suggest any further questions I should ask on the phone, I am glad to.
    Thanks, Doug
