Robert, your grandfathers hammer gun is from 1905 and is what I call a 3 pin 1 screw back action lock. The barrels look to be Royal Steel and were used on most, but Best English Stub Twist and Good Damascus could still be ordered. The Royal Steel barrels were the lowest priced barrels offered even though they were fluid steel (cheaper to make) The grade of the gun is an F grade and also the lowest priced man and with Royal Steel barrels was approximately $20.00 then.

There are more events now shooting hammer guns and in the last 8 years had really taken off. Once your gun has been determined safe to shoot by a qualified gunsmith who knows L.C. Smiths, then there is now reason not to shoot it. There are a few companies making shells for vintage guns and RST is one of them.

    Good luck and good shooting.
