Thank you Mills. I saw your post on the PGCA Forum. Have been hoping for some time to see an image of the first gun, which I assume is the 1894 Quality No. 7 Syracuse seen on the cover and p. 93 Houchins' L.C. Smith "The Legend Lives". The barrels are described by Houchins as "Choice Damascus - Herring Bone Pattern Three Rod - 70% Steel" and are a Bernard variant; different from the Rose Pattern Bernard II seen on Parker C grades. It is the SAME pattern as found on this 1897 16g Bro. David's 1897 No. 1 and a few other guns of that time frame. One can only assume that a few of these high grade tubes were found in the bin, and the Hunter Bros. elected to use them up as the Damascus era was coming to an end. Crown steel was already offered at that point, and Nitro steel was to be introduced in 1898. Very interesting! Could you please send me by jpg attachment a full size image for the PictureTrail? revdoc2@cox.net and thanks!
