Nearly all shooters have heard of the "Pachmayer White Line" rubber recoil pad, but long before Pachmayer made this pad even more popular, that pad was known simply as the White Line rubber recoil pad. Pachmayer purchased the White Line name and rights to produce the pad after L.C. Smith gun production ceased; but the original White Line pad was very popular during the Marlin/Smith gun era, and that pad was offered as an option to period customers. The Charles H. Jerred unfinished Deluxe Smith gun from the late 1940's features an original White Line pad; which says a lot about how period shooters viewed this pad. Other period shooters preferred the Hawkins pad, which seems to be very popular on Smith guns; as well as the Silvers pad and other brands. I personally don't care for the looks of a White Line jpad; but that pad would certainly be an appropriate choice for a Marlin era Smith gun if desired.
