    Chris, your mother-in-laws shotgun is from 1948. In 1945 L.C. Smith was bought by Marlin Firearms Co and the name was changed to L.C. Smith Gun Company. The S prefix denotes the Marlin era guns. If you go here you will see the year produced,

    If a Field Grade there will be a stamp on the flat part of the receiver when the barrels are removed, it should have FW meaning Feather Weight frame, S indicating Marlin era, serial number and below that Field.
    Just make sure if you take the barrels off that you open the gun fully then close it, then take the for-end off and the barrels. This is in case the hammers were let off and if you took it apart without doing so and they were let-off you would have a hard time putting the for-end on. It also causes a lot of stress on the for-end wood doing this.
