Derek, nice to know the gun is being passed down in the family.
From your serial number this gun was made in 1887 and from your description might be a Quality 2. Pictures would help to identify it. At this time all guns from L.C. Smith Syracuse, M.Y. has Damascus barrels. Also at this time the Quality 2 cost $80.00 and was quite a sum of money then.
If this gun was handed down from the beginning, I'm guessing your grandfather was given this from his father.
