I didn't want to hijack the 2 ga set thread any further. I am not being argumentative as I am fascinated by every example of quality American doubles, especially the unique ones, and I make no statement that any other maker is better or worse than a Smith, but I still say the Market Hunter was not so far off in his statement of "not so many special order Smiths". I took his statement to mean "non cataloged options" not simply made to order guns and that is certainly what I am refering to. Now Mr. Archer I have read all your double gun journal articles and many forum posts I woukd hope this isn't dismissed as frivolous barrel lengths and half size or metric gauges. Certainly the Dead Pigeon Gun or the Owl A-2 would be great examples of the extremely unique, but I can't think of many Smiths I've seen turn up that don't fit a mold. If I remember correctly Andy Andersons study of grade 2 guns turned up just one gun with a unique but simple variation on 3 engraving patterns. "Brants Brant" as he called it. That doesn't mean there aren't incredible Grade 2 guns out there, I just would expect to find one that there is none other like.
