Marcus, if the checkering is that worn, try using a stripper on the checkering to leave a footprint to follow later. Refinish the stock with whatever finish you use and then re-cut the checkering. To fill in the fresh cut checkering I use a toothbrush with some mineral spirits with stain and then follow up using the another toothbrush with finish on it. Using the mineral spirits will dilute the stain so that the area is not darker and then a light coat of finish to protect the checkered wood.
