Gunsmith for BARREL evaluation Archived Message

Posted by Drew Hause on January 1, 2015, 12:38 pm

Angels fear to tread the innards of Smith guns and I have enormous respect for those smiths with the interest and expertise to evaluate, repair, restore, and occasionally resuscitate our vintage doubles.
That said, evaluating BARRELS (pattern welded or fluid steel) requires the tools, experience, and time investment to be done properly.

When making a decision as to the smith you will be using, if he is unable to tell you the wall thickness at the end of the chambers, the forcing cones, 9" from the breech and muzzle, and minimal wall thickness and WHERE, I would suggest another opinion.
A member of the LCSCA recently shared with me that a well known smith told him that he did not have a wall thickness gauge

Please be careful out here, and have a joy-filled and SAFE 2015
