Richard, David gives good advice. I take it that you are not interested in a professional restoration, but to cosmetically restore and repair the wood. If so, I have done that to a few guns that don't, and never will be closet queens. My method is similar to David's but eliminating one of his steps---. I go over the wood with 0000 steel wool to knock the sheen off the undamaged finish- and then apply a light coat of Tru oil to the damaged areas, feathering it onto the undamaged areas. The result is a more shiny surface on the undamaged finish. After drying I lightly sand the areas with the steel wool again, and then reapply Tru oil, repeating the procedure until the finish on the formerly damaged areas is to your taste. The final steps are to sand lightly again with the grain, dulling the sheen evenly, and then apply a carnuba wax all over and buff.
