To achieve the correct color after soaking I use Art's French Red sold by Brownells. They make two types. One is a stain only. The other is stain with filler and does both in one step. I have used both acetone and hot water with soap for degreasing and removal of old finish. Both work well. Water is cheaper so it can be changed more frequently, and can be disposed of by just dumping it down the drain. As Jent mentioned it also helps raise the dents. I have not used acetone for a long time for these reasons.
