Ok. Here is my take. If the gun is in good shape I would not worry about the metal or action on the gun. The wood is another matter. Wood just does not weather like steel. You do not want to crack the stock on your new gun. For this reason the 1 1/4 load is probably a bit heavy. I think if you were to pattern your gun with 1oz 1150 /1200 fps shells (Rst or Polywad) you will find that they both pattern very well and will be excellent to put a rooster on his butt. 5s or 6s. Close shots the cylinder bore....longer the modified. How far you can effectively reach with the chokes you have will be shown when you pattern the gun. I would start at 15/17 yards and go to 35/40 yards. Remember pattern kills. Shooting the lighter load will help preserve your L.C. Smith. Your gun's wood will like you, you will be happy....the pheasants not so much. Good luck. Ps: Take a quick read in the FAQ on this web site.
