The Curtis release is in addition to the normal Baker J spring snap on. If the total Curtis release is missing, it should snap off like a normal fore end, but if only the rod or rod tip of the Curtis release is missing, the U shaped portion of the latch may still be holding in the grooves of the fore end lug, preventing removal. I think that a metal rod of the correct diameter pushed down in the hole in the fore end should release the latch so that the fore endnd will snap off.
