Referring to the Brophy book (also) I think the earliest chamber dimension reference I could find was 1907 - a shop drawing. I'm not 100% sure about barrels made prior to that date and I don't know how they chambered them at Syracuse but I've always believed that ALL Hunter Arms 12 ga. barrels were chambered 2-3/4 regardless of date. That belief is just based on what someone else told me so it's not established fact. I can tell you though that my 1898 has 2-3/4" chambers and they don't appear (to me) to have been modified. Isn't it interesting then that Hunter short chambered all of their small gauges?
