Opening Width of Extractor L.C. Smith Archived Message

I have not seen much on this, but I just can't be the only one that has found this a nuisance and would like to change it. I have been shooting L.C. Smiths for a lot of years, and my old Elsie is not so bad, but my latest Specialty Grade is definitely worse.

When I open it, it doesn't open wide enough to be friendly when it comes to loading and unloading. You have to really push the barrels down hard to hold the gun open wide enough to get the shells on or out.

I know it has to do with the thickness of the cocking plate which keeps the gun from opening as wide as I would like it to for fast and easy reloading. Do people sometimes thin these cocking plates down to allow for a little more open width?
I like ejector guns as long as they work, but I am plenty fast enough with an extractor gun, except when I have to fight it, to get the shells in and out. Suggestions?
