Confused about serial number markingArchived Message

Looking for a little help. Why would a trigger guard be marked as S-xxxxx when all other serial numbers have no reference to an S? I will add that this gun is a two barrel set. From all other markings, the gun does not appear to be built after 1946. Again the only reference to an S is on the trigger guard. Help!!
